The Ultimate Turkey Loop: A 15-Night Guide from Istanbul to Alaçatı

From the bustling, minaret-lined skyline of Istanbul to the surreal, hot-air-balloon-filled skies of Cappadocia, our journey across Turkey was nothing short of magical. Over 15 unforgettable nights, we watched history come alive in ancient ruins, felt the thrill of paragliding over the turquoise waters of Ölüdeniz, and lost ourselves in the vibrant coastal charm of Kas, Ölüdeniz, and Alaçatı.

Turkey is a land where East meets West, where every corner holds a century-old secret, and where the hospitality is as warm as the Mediterranean sun. Grab a cup of Turkish tea and join us as we recount our adventure through this mesmerizing country—from our first steps in historic streets to the coastal breeze of the Aegean.

Traveling with our five-month-old meant embracing a slower, more intentional pace. We extended our stay to 15 nights to ensure we could trade off on adventures, allowing one of us to always be present with him while the other explored. For couples traveling without a kid, this entire journey can be comfortably experienced in a more condensed 12 to 13 nights.

Things to Remember While Travelling in Turkey

• Cash vs. Card: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities, hotels, and restaurants. However, you must carry cash for small vendors, street food, markets, public transit, and tipping.

• Fuel Stations: Fuel stations are full-service. An attendant will pump the fuel for you and print a slip. You then take this slip inside to the cashier (Kasa) to pay with cash or card.

• Ubers & Taxis: Uber exists in major cities (Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir), but it only dispatches licensed yellow or turquoise taxis, not private citizen cars. Booking via the Uber app (or the popular local app BiTaksi) is highly recommended.

• Language: While English is widely spoken in resort towns like Ölüdeniz and tourist districts of Istanbul, learning a few basic Turkish words goes an incredibly long way in building goodwill with locals.

Where to Stay: Old City Fatih (Airbnb)

Day 1: Imperial Grandeur at Dolmabahçe

Our journey began with a walk through the grand halls of the Ottoman Empire's final imperial palace. The sheer scale of the chandeliers and the stunning Bosphorus waterfront views made for an unforgettable introduction to Istanbul's royal history. Uber rides are very easy and convenient in Turkey. We carried a Doona for our five-month-old, so it was convenient as a stroller and car seat in most rides.

Day 2: Palatial Secrets & Sunken Wonders

We dove deep into imperial history at Topkapı Palace, exploring the Harem and the treasury. Afterward, we headed underground to the Basilica Cistern, where the Medusa heads and the eerie, ancient atmosphere felt like stepping into another world.

Day 3: Architectural Icons & Rooftop Magic

This day was dedicated to the heavy hitters: the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Standing beneath those massive domes is a spiritual experience in itself. We capped it off with a sunset dinner at Seven Hills Restaurant, watching the seagulls fly between the two icons.

Note for Mosque Visits: To avoid long queues, we highly recommend arriving early in the morning. Additionally, since some sites—particularly mosques—are active places of worship, they may occasionally be closed to visitors. Be sure to check their schedules in advance to avoid planning your visit on a day when they are inaccessible. Visitors should dress modestly and are recommended to carry a shawl or scarf to cover their heads when entering a mosque.

Day 4: Old City Wandering & Bosphorus Breezes

Taking a break from the major queues, we explored the local side of the Old City. As the sun began to set, we boarded a Bosphorus cruise, watching the palaces and mansions of Europe and Asia glide side-by-side.

Day 5: Artistic Traditions & The Ultimate Hammam

We spent a creative morning learning to paint traditional Turkish motifs, gaining a new appreciation for the intricate patterns seen throughout the city. We finished the day with a deeply relaxing, traditional Turkish Hammam bath—the ultimate reset.

Day 6: Aromatic Bazaars & The Perfect Brew

On our final day, we lost ourselves in the scents of the Spice Bazaar, loading up on saffron and Turkish delight. We ended our stay by mastering the art of Turkish coffee, learning the secrets of the froth and the culture of slow sipping.
